Merrick at a glance
Merrick is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, so most building permits here go through the Town rather than a village hall. Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road cut across it, the LIRR stops at Merrick station, and on its south side the land turns into canals that lead out to the bays. Merrick also has one of the more unusual parks on Long Island: Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, a former landfill that is now a nature preserve with a hill you can walk up for a view across the water.
For garage doors, that split matters. North of Merrick Road the homes are inland and the usual wear applies. South of it, on the canal streets, the salt and the storm tides add rust and flooding to the list.
Picking a new door: canal side or inland?
Canal-front and south Merrick: a vinyl door can't rust, so it's our first suggestion close to the water. Inland Merrick: an insulated steel door gives the best value — quieter, stiffer and warmer than a single-layer door.
| Door, installed | Starting at |
|---|---|
| Single steel (8x7 / 9x7) | $1,550 |
| Single insulated steel | $1,995 |
| Double steel (16x7) | $2,500 |
| Double insulated steel | $2,950 |
| Carriage-house style | $2,500 |
| Vinyl | $3,250 |
| Wood | $3,600 |
| Full-view aluminum & glass | $3,900 |
Window inserts are from $400 and hauling away the old door from $395. New doors carry a 5–10 year installation warranty, depending on the door, and the NEWDOOR250 coupon takes $250 off.
Which garage door opener fits your home?
A standard ceiling-mounted opener fits most garages. What changes the choice is the house:
- A bedroom over or next to the garage → a belt drive, which runs much quieter than a chain.
- Low ceiling or a beam in the way → a wall-mount opener that sits beside the door.
- Canal-side homes → battery backup, so a storm outage doesn't trap the car.
- A detached garage at the back of the lot → Wi-Fi control, to check from the house or your phone that it's closed.
| Opener, installed | Starting at |
|---|---|
| LiftMaster 8165W — chain | $525 |
| LiftMaster 84505R — belt, Wi-Fi, battery backup | $550 |
| Genie StealthDrive 750 — belt | $575 |
| LiftMaster 87504-267 — belt, Wi-Fi, battery backup, camera | $650 |
| LiftMaster 8500W / 98022 — wall-mount | $875 |
| We install an opener you bought | $285 |
An opener from us has a 3-year warranty, plus the manufacturer's warranty once you register it with the manufacturer. If you supply the opener, our warranty covers the installation and the manufacturer covers the unit. The OPENER99 coupon takes $99 off a new opener. Michael programs your remotes before he leaves and shows you how to open the door by hand in a power outage.
An opener for parents who still lift the door
If a parent in Merrick still lifts the garage door by hand every day, an opener turns that into a button press. With Wi-Fi you can check from your own phone that their door is closed. Seniors and military get 10% off, openers included. If you're arranging it for a parent, call us, choose the opener together, and we'll schedule the visit with them.

Doors & openers: your questions
How much is a new garage door installed in Merrick?
From $1,550 for a single steel door, $1,995 insulated, and $2,500 for a double door. Vinyl starts at $3,250. You get the exact price in writing after we measure.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door in Merrick?
Most of Merrick is in the unincorporated Town of Hempstead, so permit questions go to the Town of Hempstead Building Department. Check with the Town before you start.
What opener is quietest for a garage under a bedroom?
A belt-drive opener, such as the LiftMaster 84505R (from $550 installed) or the Genie StealthDrive 750 (from $575). Belt drives run much quieter than chain drives.
Is a vinyl garage door worth it away from the water?
Inland, an insulated steel door is usually the better value. Vinyl makes the most sense on canal-front and south Merrick homes, where salt causes rust.
Do seniors get a discount on a new opener?
Yes. Seniors and military get 10% off, and it applies to openers too.
Can you put an opener on a detached garage in Merrick?
Yes, as long as the garage has power. If there’s no outlet near the ceiling, have an electrician add one first; then the install is the same as an attached garage.
