Yaphank is one of the oldest hamlets in the Town of Brookhaven. It grew around Captain Robert Robinson's mill on the Carmans River, built in 1739; the place was first called Millville and took the name Yaphank when its post office opened in 1846. The Long Island Rail Road reached it in 1843. In 1917 the Army opened Camp Upton here, where Irving Berlin wrote the revue "Yip Yip Yaphank," and the site is now Brookhaven National Laboratory. Today Yaphank is home to the Suffolk County Police headquarters and the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center, and most of it is in the Longwood Central School District.
About 6,000 people live in Yaphank's 13.8 square miles, and the housing is a real mix.
